Popular Culture

Poplular Culture has difinitely shaped my life and my circle of friends. Popluar culture is defined by what mass media has had an effect on; what is "popular". My friends and i have the same interests in movies, music, hobbies, hangout areas, and clothing. These are all things that popular culture defines us as. It says PC is always changing and always being redefined. We are alwasy looking for something new. What is the new big fad? So we follow PC as it changes and we agree or disagree with it. This is how our circles also change. Not everybody will like the new Panic!at the disco CD just because the first record was a huge hit right away. It may be the next big thing or it will have an influence on who we will choose to hang out with. "PC is very indivualistic"; i agree. I try to be my own individual even if i may fall into a certain Popular Culture category. I can change my mind, my opinion, my friends, my taste in everything. Folk Culture does not allow you to do that. You are basically stuck with what you first like.
It asks "Why are some 80% of all films worldwide either made or produced in the U.S.? Why is American popular music so popular globally?". This is true because we have the most freedom of self expression that the rest of the world doesn't. To them all of our old stuff may be considered new because they are not always seeing the changes of our art, music, movies, or media. But you could also ask "why is music from England or Canada such a big hit in the US?"It's because they have a different Popular Culture than us that we think is "new".

You made some interesting points as to how pop culture has shaped and influenced your life. I didn't really agree with you when you said that we have the most freedom of self expression. I think we have freedom but not most of it when you compare other countries and their cultures.

Much of this post addresses my beliefs pertaining to both this assignment about popular culture, and the nature of socialization. While we are all individuals, we long to be part of a group with which we can relate and which has similar interests. Sometimes we strive to create groups, sometimes we seek groups which already share the same ideas; but the fact remains that we seek to belong. The question now arises; is popular culture an extension of the human mind, or is the human mind a product of popular culture? Strangely, the answer to this questions is "both." This realization further proves (to me) that our mind is what makes us who we are, and that each person has a different frame of reference, creating their tastes, likes, dislikes, etc. Also, ss Cristina states, not everyone will like the new Panic! At The Disco CD simply because their first record was a huge hit, and this is an important part of this equation, because it shows that popular culture, like culture overall, and like the human mind itself, is quite malleable. This allows for constant variation, differentiation, and diversity, a staple of human existance which at the same time brings us together yet allows us to remain an individual. Her examples of differing U.S., English, and Canadian popular culture facilitate this further, as the constant of "popular culture" persists, the randomness of the indiviiduality of humans creates differeing perspectives of what is accepted by the masses.

I totally agree with your last paragraph. The that America's popluar culture is dictated to the rest of the world is because of the freedoms that we have. Our American media can reach every part of the world, with our news, music, and sports that our pop culture is thrown onto these other nations.

I agree with almost everything you say. I believe that pop culture has shaped my life in a similar way. That my group of friends are my friends because we share similar interests that we have decided to accept or gather from pop culture. Making myself and my group of friends similar to one another yet different to the whole. I also think that pop culture can change very quickly and be divided into many groups within itself. I liked how you stated that Canada and Europe have a pop culture as well yet it is effected by different factors than that of the United
States and therefore can be very different.
