synthesis

I used to have a hard time putting my thoughts into words verbally. It was also a little difficult to do it on paper as well, but I have definitely improved on that this past year. It is a lot easier now for me to write what I want to say and have it sound the way I want it to. I find it to be way easier to write creatively than academically. I like just writing about whatever comes to mind, with no specific topic at hand. Academically needs research and back up information. It’s less creative. Usually before I start writing something academically I picture what I want it to look like or sound like. I think of how I want it to flow. Usually it comes together the way i want, sometimes it doesn’t. That is another issue with writing academically; I get disappointed when it doesn’t turn out the way I intended it to. This relates to the multi modal texts because I really have to think about how I want it all layed out and what branches off where. It’s like drawing a map for the MM.

Yes, unlike free writing, academic writing needs an outline not necessarily on paper but in mind. Academic writing dose need lots of background knowledge, so it is much easier to write in the fields we are familiar with. Reading more books must be helpful for our academic writing.

Rain is absolutely correct - it is easier to write in the field with which you are the most familiar, and it makes sense to do this. This is why I have my students choose their own topics, and try to have the topics related to their majors or something important in their lives that affects them in some way.
